2019 Youth Summit: Planting the SEEDs of Opportunity
With an overall focus on sustainability, SEEDs represent our four workshop themes: Self care and wellness, Engaging communities, Environmental consciousness, and Developing leaders.
Every day, opportunities are presented to us (youth and adults alike). Sometimes we are aware of when this happens, but most often, we are blind to the fact that almost anything, with care and cultivation, can be turned into a big opportunity. It takes a keen eye to notice the small bud of an opportunity and it takes patience and hard work to see that bud into a full blossom. As our team consistently works to build and strengthen the KFL&A network of youth-adult partnerships, our goal is to use the 2019 Youth Summit to connect youth with opportunities and opportunities to youth. We want youth to consciously plant those small seeds for unique and interesting opportunities that they may not typically get to plant. We want adults who work with youth and for youth to have the opportunity to listen and learn alongside young people; we want adults to consciously provide the seeds of opportunities that can grow into big individual trees and even greater, community-wide forests.
We recognize that not all seeds grow in the same way or at the same time. Some seeds will take longer to sprout than others and we recognize that some seeds will not sprout until the conditions are exactly right. As young people, we think this directly reflects how ourselves and our peers grow into adulthood. For some, the seed of an opportunity may take hold right away. For those individuals, they may have the right sort of circumstances working in their favour to allow them to grow and blossom quickly. For others, that same seed of an opportunity may take longer to grow. They may need to wait until their environment is conducive to promoting growth. Our team also recognizes, that depending on the type of seed, on the type of opportunity, both of these scenarios can occur within the same person. However, one thing does remain certain in all cases: the growth and seeing that opportunity into fruition cannot start until that seed is planted. Thus, we want to provide KFL&A youth with the chance to start Planting the SEEDs of Opportunity with the 2019 Youth Summit.
